17. Syllabus for the Main Examination:-

Syllabus for Stenographers Grade ‘C’ and Stenographers Grade ‘D’ Examination

Paper I:

General English:- In addition to the testing of candidates’ understanding of the Hindi/English Language and its correct usage, their writing ability would also be tested.

Questions on Paragraph Writing/Report Writing/Letter Writing/Precis, etc. may be included.

General Studies:- Questions in this component will be aimed at testing the candidates’ general awareness of the environment around him/her and its application to society. Questions will also be designed to test knowledge of current events and of such matters of every day observations and experience in their scientific aspect as may be expected of any educated person. The test will also include questions relating to India and its neighbouring countries specially pertaining to Sports, History, Culture, Geography, Economic Scene, General Polity including the Constitution of India, scientific research, etc. These questions will be such that they do not require a special study of any discipline.

Paper-II: Essay: Candidates will be required to write Essays on two topics. They will be expected to keep closely to the subject of the essay, to arrange their ideas in orderly fashion and to write concisely. Credit will be given for effective and exact expression. Credit will also be given for good legible handwriting.

Syllabus for LDCs Examination:

Paper I:

General English:- In addition to the testing of candidates’ understanding of the English Language and its correct usage, their writing ability would also be tested.

Questions on Paragraph Writing/Report Writing/Letter Writing, etc. may be included.

General Studies:- Questions in this component will be aimed at testing the candidates’ general awareness of the environment around him/her and its application to society. Questions will also be designed to test knowledge of current events and of such matters of every day observations and experience in their scientific aspect as may be expected of any educated person. Paper II:

Arithmetic:- Questions in this component will cover number system including questions on simplification, Decimals, Fractions, LCM, HCF, Ratio and Proportion, Percentage, Average, Profit and Loss, Discount, Simple and Compound Interest, Mensuration, Time and Work, Ratio and Time, Time and Distance, Tables and Graphs, etc.

18. Typewriting Test/Shorthand Test

The candidates who qualify the Main Examination(s) will have to appear for Typewriting Test/Stenography Test as the case may be. Details of the typewriting test/stenography test are as below:-

Typewriting Test (for the posts of lower division clerk only):-

Typewriting Test is a qualifying test only. Candidates are allowed to take the typewriting test either in Hindi (Devnagari Script) or in English. Candidates will have to bring their own Typewriter for the test. Use of electronic Typewriter is not allowed in typewriting test. The Typewriting test will consist of one paper on running matter of 10 minutes duration for general candidate. For VH candidates the typing test will be of 30 minute duration. Only those candidates who secure in the written (Main) Examination, such minimum qualifying marks as may be fixed by the Commission will be eligible to be considered for appearing in the Typewriting Test and only such of them who qualify in the Typewriting Test at the prescribed speed will be recommended in the Final Select List for appointment upto the number of vacancies available, subject to their merit position.

Second chance for Typing test will not be given to any candidate whose typewriter goes out of order during the currency of test.

Passage Dictators will be provided to each of VH candidates by the Commission for the Typewriting test. The Passage Dictators will read out the passage to the VH candidates within the allotted time period.

Note-I: A candidate who claims to be permanently unfit to take the typewriting test because of a physical disability may, with the prior approval of the Chairman/Chairperson, Staff Selection Commission, be exempted from the requirement of appearing and qualifying at such test, provided such a candidate submits a Certificate in the prescribed format to the Commission from the competent Medical Authority, i.e., the Civil Surgeon declaring him/her to be permanently unfit for the Typewriting Test because of a physical disability.

Note-II: A candidate who submit a Medical Certificate from the Medical Board attached to VRC for PH persons or from the Medical Board attached to Special Employment Exchange for PH persons, his/her claim for exemption from Typewriting Test would be accepted straightaway. However, a candidate who submits Medical Certificate from Civil/Orthopaedic Surgeon, his/her case would be referred to a Medical Board in a Government Hospital or Medical Board attached to VRC/Special Employment Exchange for PH persons for clearance.

Candidates seeking exemption from Typing test on medical ground must substantiate their claim by furnishing the relevant Medical Certificate in the prescribed Format as published in this Notice (Annexure-VIII ) alongwith their application for appearing in the Examination otherwise their claim for seeking exemption from Typing Test will not be entertained by the Commission. However, the Commission will have full discretion to relax the condition in exceptional and deserving cases.

Stenography Test:

(a) For Grade ‘D’ Stenographers:-

Shorthand Test in Hindi or in English - 300 marks (for those who qualify at the Main Examination).

As per the medium of Stenography Test indicated by the candidates in their Application Form, the candidates will be given one dictation test in English or in Hindi at the speed of 80 words per minute for 10 minutes. The candidates who opt to take the Shorthand Test in English will be required to transcribe the matter in 65 minutes and the candidates who opt to take the test in Hindi will be required to transcribe the matter in 75 minutes.

1. Candidates will be required to transcribe their shorthand notes on manual typewriters and for this purpose, they will be required to bring their own typewriters with them at their own risk and expense.

2. Candidates who opt to take the Stenography Test in Hindi will be required to learn English Stenography and vice versa after their appointment.

3. Second chance for Stenography Test will not be given to those candidates whose typewriters go out of order during the currency of test.

4. VH candidates will be required to transcribe the matter in 90 minutes for English Shorthand or in 110 minutes for Hindi Shorthand.

b) For Grade‘C’ Stenographers:- 300 Marks

Shorthand Test in Hindi or in English - 300 marks (for those who qualify at the Main Examination).

The Shorthand Tests in English will comprise of one dictation test at 100 words per minute for ten minutes, which the candidates will be required to transcribe in 50 minutes.

The shorthand tests in Hindi will comprise of one dictation test at 100 words per minute for 10 minutes, which the candidates will be required to transcribe in 65 minutes.

VH candidates will be required to transcribe the matter in 80 minutes for English Shorthand tests and in 105 minutes for Hindi Shorthand test.

Candidates will be required to transcribe their shorthand notes on manual typewriters and for this purpose, they will be required to bring their own typewriters with them.

Second chance for stenography test will not be given to those candidates whose typewriters go out of order during the currency of test.

Candidates who opt to take the Stenography Test in Hindi will be required to learn English Stenography and vice versa after their appointment.

Note: No exemption from Stenography Test both for Stenographers Grade ‘C’ and Stenographers Grade ‘D’ will be granted to any category of candidates on any condition/circumstance.
