Rules For Admission to Sainik Schools :

General Information of Sainik School :

Sainik Schools were opened in different regions of our country in the year 1960-61 with utmost efforts of the then Defence Minister Mr. VK Krishna Menon. At present there are 18 Sainik Schools in our country. Sainik Schools are residential schools for boys providing public school education with a military bias.

Aim :

The aim of these schools is to prepare students academically, physically and psychologically for entry into the National Defence Academy at Kharakvasala, Pune. These schools are affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education New Delhi. And the syllabus is that of CBSE.

School Fees of Sainik School :

The guardians / parents of the students studying in Sainik School are required to pay an amount of Rupee 48,000 per annum. Besides this, pocket money of Rupee 1500/- per year is to be paid by every student including scholarship holders.

A few merit cum means scholarships are available. The share of the state government for full scholarship is Rupee 12, 000 and that of the centre is Rupee 2000/-, the rest of the fees is to be borne by the parents.

Selection Procedure Selection of the students for Sainik School admission into class VI and Class IX done of the basis of entrance examination conducted every year during January. The Sainik School applications are given by the Principal of the respective schools, on payment of Rupee 300/-. The Sainik School applications are given usually sold in the month of November and the written tests are conducted during the first Sunday in January of the following year. The candidates are admitted in the Sainik school in June the following year. (For Sainik School Amaravathi nagar the admission is done on the last week of April)

Age Limit : Age of boys for class VI – the candidate should not have completed the age of 11 Years as on 01 July of the year of admission.

For Class IX : the boy should have been studying in class VIII, and should not have completed the age of 14 years as on 01 July of the year of admission.

Tests for Class VI and Class IX are as follows :

  1. Mathematics and language Test
  2. Intelligence tests (Written Test conducted on the same day)
  3. Interview and medical for class VI & IX (Medical Test Conducted only for those candidates who qualify the written test)

The Sainik School written test results are announced in about 30 days from the date of conduct of written examination.

Note : For Sainik School Amaravathi Nagar (Tamil Nadu) the medical tests are being conducted at No. 6 Air force Hospital, Red fields, Coimbatore 641018.

Medical examination would be held, some time during the month of March First / Second Week). Medical examination fee of Rupee 100 has to be paid in the form of DD favouring the Commandant No. 6 Air Force Hospital. The test will be carried out from 0800 hours to 1600 hours, by medical officers.

Parents are advised to get the dental check up done for the candidate before appearing for the medical examination.

Viva (Interview) tests are conducted at the School premises on the following day of the Medical Examination.

An advice to Parents :

Kindly get your child medically checked up before you decide to put your child in the Sainik School, i.e. even before you apply for the admission. This will save a lot of mental tension, at a later stage.

For admission in Sainik School, 67% of the seats of each school are reserved for boys from the state in which the School is located. 25% of Reserved for Defence Service personnel. 8% Seats are reserved for UT of the respective states. Certain Quota from the 67% is reserved for students belonging to SC and ST Community.

The Sainik School seat for Class VI is 125 and about 20 seats in Class IX per year, out of which 33% is reserved for children of Defence personnel.

The defence personnel should make use of the Defence Scholarship that is available. (Please contact the nearest District Soldiers, sailors and Airmen Board for the latest details.)

In Tamil Nadu the Sainik School is located in Udumalpet taluk, about 13 Kms away from Udumalpet amongst the green belt of Amaravathi nagar.
